Last Thursday, we went to the Oktoberfest! OktoberFest....beer festival...Munich... Bavarian attire...party... These are all words that come to mind when we think of Oktoberfest.

In today’s article, we are going to present some facts that you may or may not already know: 

  1. Oktoberfest is originated back in 1810. It started off as a celebration of the marriage between King Ludwig 1 and his wife Therese of Saxony. It closed off with a horse race. 

  1. The Bavarians liked the horse race so much that the following year, they decided to do it again which gave a rise to the Oktoberfest. The last horse race was held in 1938.  

  1. The Agricultural Show, which today held once every three years, was first held in 1811 which was created with the idea to boost local agriculture. In 1818, the pubs were included in the show.  

  1. By 1896, the first beer tents and halls appeared.  

  1. Today, the festival lasts for 16 days, instead of the traditional five days, and ends on the first Sunday of October.  

  1. For the beer lovers, the major Munich brewers are:  Hacker-Pschorr , Lowenbrau, Spaten, Hofbrauhaus, Augustiner, and Paulaner. 

  1. The Bavarians call it Die Wiesn short for the name of the fields in which it continues to be held.  

  1. It was renamed to Autumn Festival in 1923, 1924, and 1946-1948.  

  1. During WWI, WWII and 1919-1920 the festival was not held.  

  1. Die Wiens was cancelled a total of 24 times since 1810.
